What is Technical Editing?

Tech-editing is a step in the pattern design process in which a qualified person looks at the design to check for errors and overall clarity, ideally, before the design is sent out to pattern testers.

I offer in-depth line-edits on crochet and knitting patterns. This includes, but is not entirely limited to errors, inconsistencies, and general readability of the pattern. I proofread and also try to check for clarity of the instructions, making sure that what you're saying matches up with your finished object, or your schematic. I am a knitter with over 10 years of experience, and more than 20 completed test patterns. I have been crocheting for the same length of time. I have also done copy editing as a side job while putting myself through school. I have a great eye for detail and love to get into the minutiae of style and consistency guidelines.

I bill hourly, at $34, but if your pattern takes me less than an hour to edit, I will bill in 15-minute increments. (If your pattern takes me 45 minutes to edit (which would be typical for hats or small accessories) I would only charge $25.50, for the time. In the tiers described below on packages that I offer, the dollar amount given is typically the amount billed for these tiers of service.

I highly encourage you to come up with (or to have me generate) a style guide that will make it easier for me to spot inconsistencies (especially if I have not knit or edited your patterns before). The style guide includes things like regular capitalization (K or k, P or p), whether or not you use an Oxford comma, etc. I have an add-on service that you can have me generate for you to use with other editors, or so that I can look at it in the future and save you money long-term.

Currently, I do not offer grading, but I will be offering it in the very near future, as well as some great add-on content.

Add-Ons

  • Personalized “style guide” that you can use to give to tech editors in the future (or for me to use in the future) for how you want your patterns to read and what your particular consistencies are (e.g. Do you always capitalize K, or leave it lowercase? Do you tend to tell people to repeat x number of times, or until y rows have been completed total? etc.), +25-50 typically.

  • Professional quality tutorial videos for special techniques, +$50-75 depending on the complexity of the demonstration

  • Test knit group moderation - when you take your pattern to test knitters and want someone else who knows the pattern as well as you do to be able to answer questions. +$50-$75 depending on time requirement.
