About me
I am Monica (she/her/hers). I am a neuro-divergent, plus-sized, bisexual wildlife biologist who spends her free time making. I sew, knit, crochet, and Tunisian crochet. I also dabble in other things like wood-burning, graphic design, or jewelry making from time to time. I grew up using crafting and pretending to be a fairy in the woods as my escapism. Now I create plus-sized knit and crochet garments and photograph them in the woods to live my childhood dream of being the witch of the woods.
I am also a statistics and excel-sheet minded human being who has an intense love for the details of every project I've worked on. I love finding the minutae and bringing it to light, as well as correcting small errors that make things easier to look at. That is what makes me good at copy-editing, tech editing, and website design.
Why Quarrelsome Rhino?
As I said above, I'm a wildlife biologist. Rhinoceros conservation is what got me into studying wildlife in the first place. When I was in the 8th grade, I wrote a report on my favorite author, Douglas Adams. He was a founding member and staunch supporter of Save the Rhino International. He hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro in a rhino suit to support the cause. Since then I have been (obsessed) interested in rhinoceros conservation, and learning as much about rhinos as I possibly can. Did you know that they can be tracked and individually identified based on their footprints? The crack patterns in their heels act as a "fingerprint" and allow trackers to keep tabs on individual rhinos from a safe distance (from "Monitoring rhinoceroses in Namibia's private custodian properties." by Jewell et. al 2020).
There is also a video game that my husband introduced me to from the 90s, in that wonderful era of point-and-click adventure games called The Secret of Monkey Island. In one sequence, the main character Guybrush Threepwood has to "hypnotize Quarrelsome Rhinoceros" and I think he also has to use toenail clippers on the quarrelsome rhinoceros at one point, which would be very entertaining to watch. However, I took my name from this sequence of the game because I love how the word Quarrelsome sounds.
Inclusivity Statement:
I refuse to give space to racist, classist, sexist, ableist garbage on my platform. I do my best to make an inclusive space for BIPOC, AAPI, and LGBTQIP2SAA human beings. I strictly enforce this by moderating comments and by listening to, believing, and supporting members of these communities when they perform emotional labor to share their experiences. I also do my own research, educate myself, and recognize that I benefit from the work that others before me have done. I recognize my privilege and know that I have benefitted from the systems in place, and I try to give back to organizations that are actively seeking to change those systems. If I do or say things that are not in line with this statement, I urge you to call me out on not living up to my promises. I would like to fix my mistakes and learn and grow from them.
